I absolutely love it!

All the colours, textures, flavours.

Markets with fruits and vegetables piled high enticing you to buy.

The aromas while you cook of caramelising onions, spices, cakes in the oven.

The look of it in a bowl on a plate: delicately presented or heaped.

Packaged foods disappoint me. Photographs on packets may be tempting, but remove the sleeve and the contents look unappetising.

In the early 80s I worked in the head office of a food company cooking real food for those that worked there. Next door was a test kitchen where a lovely lady experimented with dishes for the freezer. Along the top of all the cupboards were bags of white powder. I thought they were icing sugar but they turned out to be bulking agent. This was to add to the recipe to make the food go further. This shocked me, yet to many ‘ready meals’ with all the added colours, flavourings, preservatives and poverty of real ingredients are food.

All my life I have been fortunate to be well fed and to know the difference between food that nourishes me and that which doesn’t. I haven’t always made good choices but I have always come back to cooking delicious nutritious food for myself and others.

I choose to eat real food with joy, love and in good company, be it my own or with my friends and family.
